What makes a Retrofit such a hard pitch to the outside world? In these cases, it's the skill of the work that went into it. Done well, with the kinds of craftspeople we have in the Valley, the casual observer wouldn't know that these houses are 21st Century homes.
They've been stripped of siding and roof finishes, insulated and air sealed to rigorous standards, and had their cold spots, awkward layouts, and drafty windows removed. These buildings are operating on renewable energy, and act like brand new homes. But they look nearly the same as they used to. They still fit within their neighborhood's character. They are still part of the town's fabric.
Inside, the owners know. The traffic in the dining area flows better. The playroom now connects to the kitchen AND the outdoors. The back hall doesn't clog up the way it used to. And the building performance is tangible: it's quiet and still, warm and cozy. It feels like home.
